There is often a misconception that contemporary interior design means ignoring anything not "rooted in the moment." To me, nothing could be further from the truth!

Contemporary interior design is at its best when it incorporates antique and vintage furniture and accessories.  Pieces from previous design periods complement and juxtapose with contemporary pieces to create a more interesting interior space, often reflecting the homeowner’s unique personality and interests.  Family heirlooms can become the focal point of a space, without compromising the contemporary aesthetic.

A good example is a project I completed in Truro several years ago. The original home was built in the 1800s but had undergone additions and renovations over the years. The homeowner wanted modern conveniences while also preserving the unique details of the house. While the architect worked on structural issues involved in opening up the floor plan to consolidate some of the small spaces and adding a master bedroom, my challenge was to incorporate a houseful of French antiques the homeowner had collected over the years. This is where careful editing, planning and "placement" took center stage. We determined what worked and what didn't and actually ended up purchasing additional pieces.  In the end we were able to create a home that is both modern and elegant. Some highlights include:
