Project Profile - Art Deco Pied-a-Terre

Originally a single-family mansion located on Boston’s historic Beacon Hill, this 18th-century rowhouse was converted into ten condominiums in the 1970s. Over the course of many years, our long-standing client purchased the entire building one unit at a time. We then embarked on a two-year journey with him to convert it into a luxurious, four-unit boutique building. Even before the total gut renovation began, we spent months developing exquisite interior layouts, and design details for every space in each of the condos, including installing an elevator to the penthouse unit where our client would reside.

The exterior restoration of the front and rear facades pay homage to the building’s original era, while our inspiration for the “Art Deco” interiors in our client’s space came from his connection to Europe and his love of antiques from the 1930s and 40s.  Pieces sourced from the Paris flea markets and auction houses in Europe are found throughout and became focal points in our design process. As an art publisher, our client possessed an extensive art collection, requiring a dramatic lighting plan. Additionally, the penthouse was quite a bit smaller in size from his previous residence, so great attention was paid to creating ample storage with custom kitchen and bath cabinetry, a laundry room, and a series of primary bedroom closets.
